There are some restrictions to using Elements, depending on which version you use (see the end of this chapter for a quick list).

* **Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Elements:** This option includes Photoshop and Elements for Windows and macOS (as well as PhotoShop CC for a Web-only version).

* **Adobe Photoshop Express:** Photoshop Express is a Photoshop mobile app that enables you to edit images directly from your smartphone, tablet, or iPad. Even though it's not technically in the realm of image editing, its included editing tools are very powerful and work well on smaller sizes.

* **Adobe Camera Raw:** The Adobe Camera Raw plug-in is an image-processing tool that's included on the Photoshop desktop application and Adobe Camera Raw plug-ins. It enables you to perform a wide variety of image adjustments on the fly, in addition to converting images from one color space to another, filtering, and so on.

* **After Effects:** This popular video-editing program can be used for advanced effects, such as compositing and color correction. With After Effects, you can easily create different looks and the illusion of depth by overlaying graphics, colors, and images on the video. However, you can use After Effects with other programs, too.

You can use After Effects with Photoshop, and after Effects is capable of exporting files that have been opened in Photoshop. Although you can open an After Effects project within Photoshop for viewing and printing, you can't manipulate it from Photoshop.

* **Adobe Lightroom:** Adobe Light

After you purchase Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, you will get a license that allows you to use the program on up to 5 Macs, Windows or Linux computers. If you install Photoshop Elements on a laptop, you’ll be able to use it on your other Mac or PC as well.

A Photoshop Raster Effects brush is an easy way to change the appearance of an image. Using the brush, you can apply a vignette, mosaic, bleach-bypass, or other filter to an image and change its appearance.

Photoshop has a Standard Brush Set that provides more than 4,000 brushes. You can also purchase additional brush sets from third parties.

Photoshop has two types of brushes: dynamic and static. Dynamic brushes respond to a brush stroke, creating a more natural appearance. Static brushes respond only to a selected area. They are more consistent and require less effort to control. When creating a brush, Photoshop displays information about the brush while you are experimenting with it. You may need to experiment with brushes a few times to get just the right look.

Effects
Photoshop provides a wide variety of special effects and filters for making graphics look special. You can use the effects for special effects, like a keyframe-based image-transformation sequence or a panoramic image.

The best way to learn about effects and filters is to play around with them.

The amount of effort required to apply effects or to get a special effect right varies by effect and brush, but in general it doesn't take more than a few minutes of playing with an effect to get the desired result.

You can perform the following techniques to apply effects and filters:

Add effects to an image: Insert the effect into the Effects panel and position it where you want it to appear.

Remove effects from an image: Click the Reset button at the bottom of the Effects panel and select Reset to Defaults. Photoshop puts the effect back into the Effects panel, but it doesn't automatically add effects to your image.

Use a dynamic effect as a filter: The effect is used as a filter on an image, and you can change the result as you go along. To use a dynamic effect as a filter, simply click the filter icon at the bottom of the panel. When the filter appears in the Layers panel, you can then make any changes you want.

Applying a blend mode: To mix two different images together, apply a blend mode (mixing mode) to one of them. For example, if you have an image of an animal and a second image, you can apply a blend mode that combines the images. Alternatively, a blend mode can be used to soften an image to replace a particular color.
